The roots of freight forwarding stretch back to the 18th century, when innkeepers began offering a practical service: holding and forwarding travellers’ goods. What started as a simple act of hospitality soon developed into a structured trade — with early pioneers like Thomas Meadows & Co. in London supporting merchants and manufacturers. During the Age of Sail, freight forwarders were key in navigating the complex world of international shipping. Transit times dropped, reliability soared, and the foundation of modern logistics was born. In the 1950s, the arrival of containerisation revolutionised freight handling — making global trade faster, safer, and more cost-effective. Not long after, air freight added speed and agility, especially for industries like electronics and fashion. Fast forward to today — freight forwarding is at the heart of global supply chains.
